Avoid Early Decision Admissions

Applying early decision has a certain appeal. You can apply to a first-choice school and find out whether you’re in before everyone else. Often it’s easier to get in by applying early because the school knows you’ve made a commitment to it. If they accept you, you might be able to save a bunch of money on applications to other schools. The problem with applying early decision is that it’s a fantastic way to guarantee that you’ll get very little in the way of nonloan financial aid. If you’ve already made a binding commitment to attending a school, why would they try to wine and dine you with generous financial aid? No thanks! They’ll save that money for students who are on the fence and have other options, thank you very much.

Applying early decision is like telling a real estate agent that you’re absolutely in love with a home the first time you see it, that you don’t want to look at any more homes, and that you’ll pay whatever you have to in order to make it yours. It might be charming and sincere, but it’s a lousy, lousy negotiating tactic.
